Tree and Palm Removal Project in Coogee

Home Tree Services was recently contacted by a homeowner in Coogee, Sydney, who was experiencing ongoing problems with trees and palms growing too close to several retaining walls.

Over the years, a combination of alder trees, a mature cocos palm and large bird of paradise plants had established themselves along the property boundary. While the trees provided privacy and greenery, their root systems had gradually become a much bigger problem.

The roots were pushing against retaining walls on both properties, causing visible movement and cracking. Parts of the wall had started to lean, and there were concerns that the damage would continue to worsen if the trees remained in place.

After inspecting the site, it became clear that pruning alone would not solve the issue. The only practical long-term solution was complete tree removal, stump grinding and site clearance so the retaining walls could be repaired and rebuilt.

Why the Trees Needed to Be Removed

Many tree species can cause problems when planted too close to retaining walls, fences and structures.

In this Coogee project, the alder trees, cocos palm and bird of paradise plants had developed extensive root systems that were placing constant pressure on the surrounding structures.

All three species are commonly regarded as introduced or invasive species in many parts of Sydney. Alder trees can spread quickly and establish themselves in unwanted areas, while cocos palms are known for producing large quantities of seeds that readily germinate. Bird of paradise plants (Strelitzia) can also become difficult to manage due to their vigorous growth and expanding root systems.

Because these species are generally not protected trees, council approval is often not required for removal. This allowed the homeowner to address the retaining wall damage promptly and prepare the site for rebuilding works.

The homeowner was planning to remove the damaged wall and replace it with new fencing, while the neighbouring retaining wall also required repairs.

Removing the trees eliminated the source of the problem and allowed the rebuilding works to move forward.

Safe Tree Removal and Stump Grinding

The works included removal of multiple alder trees, removal of a mature cocos palm, removal of large bird of paradise plants, full stump grinding, green waste removal and complete site cleanup.

All tree waste was processed and removed from the property, leaving the area clean and ready for the next stage of the project.

Preparing the Site for Rebuilding

Once the trees and stumps had been removed, the site was ready for the retaining wall replacement and new fencing works.

This is a common situation we see throughout Coogee and Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, where older trees and palms have been planted close to walls, boundaries and buildings many years ago.
