Home Tree Services recently completed a tree pruning project at a residential property in Balmain, Sydney’s Inner West.
The homeowners contacted us because two mature trees—a Celtis sinensis (Chinese Hackberry) and a London Plane tree—had gradually grown over the roof of the house. Branches were touching the building, reducing natural light and creating an ongoing maintenance problem.
The Celtis tree was also producing large numbers of berries that regularly fell onto the roof and gutters, while the London Plane added to the seasonal leaf build-up. Together, they were creating unnecessary mess and increasing the need for regular gutter cleaning.
Our objective was to provide professional building clearance while maintaining the long-term health and appearance of both trees.
Rather than removing large sections of the canopy, our qualified arborists carefully pruned only the branches affecting the property.
Using professional climbing techniques and controlled pruning methods, we created safe clearance between the trees and the house while maintaining the natural shape and structure of each tree.
Every pruning cut was made in accordance with Australian Standard AS 4373 – Pruning of Amenity Trees, helping preserve the health, stability and future growth of the trees.
The result was improved building clearance without compromising the overall appearance of the landscape.
Trees growing too close to buildings can create a range of ongoing maintenance issues.
Professional building clearance pruning can help:
Regular pruning also allows homeowners to enjoy the benefits of mature trees while reducing the inconvenience caused by excessive canopy growth.
One of the trees on this project was a Celtis sinensis, also known as Chinese Hackberry.
Celtis sinensis is recognised as an invasive environmental weed in many parts of New South Wales because it spreads rapidly through bird-dispersed seeds and competes with native vegetation.
Although this particular tree was retained, careful pruning significantly reduced the overhang above the roof and helped minimise the nuisance caused by falling berries.
