Home Tree Services was recently called to a property in Vaucluse, Sydney, to assess a large Ficus benjamina growing on the edge of a cliff behind the home.
The tree had completely died and had become a significant safety risk. Large branches were regularly falling onto the property, damaging parts of the house and creating an increasing hazard for the homeowners.
After inspecting the tree, it was clear that removal was the safest and most practical solution.
Dead trees become increasingly unstable over time.
As timber dries out, branches lose their strength and can fail without warning. In this case, the Ficus benjamina had reached a stage where the entire structure had become extremely brittle, making the removal much more challenging than a healthy tree.
Because the tree was located on the edge of a steep cliff directly behind the house, every part of the project required careful planning to protect both the property and the crew.
Removing the tree promptly helped eliminate the ongoing risk of falling branches and further property damage.
Tree removals involving dead timber require a different approach from normal tree removals.
Throughout this project, the climber worked with multiple safety systems due to the unstable condition of the tree. Because sections of the tree could break unexpectedly, an additional safety attachment was installed to a neighbouring tree, providing a secure backup anchor while work was carried out.
The tree was dismantled gradually, with each branch and trunk section carefully cut into small manageable pieces and lowered safely into the property.
Working with smaller sections reduced the risk of uncontrolled breakage and allowed the removal to be completed safely despite the difficult access and fragile timber.
Despite the challenging location, the tree was successfully removed without damage to the home or surrounding structures.
Due to the position of the remaining stump on the cliff edge, stump grinding was not possible. The stump was left at a safe height and will naturally regenerate with new growth over time.
The site was thoroughly cleaned, and all branches and green waste were removed, leaving the property safe and tidy.
Projects like this highlight the importance of removing dead or hazardous trees before they become an even greater safety risk.
